Meet the Keadys

The first family to arrive in Melbourne in 1841 was John Keady and his wife Honora Kenny, with four young children.

They arrived on the Frances on 29 November 1841 as Assisted Immigrants.  There were 149 people on board.  The shipping records show John and Honora could both read and write, very much the exception for Irish immigrants at the time.

John and Honora sailed with four children, Thomas who was eight years old, Patrick five years old and twins John Francis and Mary who were 18 months old. They had a further five children in Melbourne, James Henry born 1843, Michael born 1844, Elizabeth and William both born in 1845 and Catherine born in 1846.
